100-Foot American Flagpole

The proposal to install a 100-foot American flagpole has created divisions among Puyallup community members. While many residents view such a monument as a powerful symbol of national pride, others question whether it is the most effective or appropriate way to express patriotism and serve the public interest.
On the pro side, a large American flag is a visible expression of national pride, gratitude for veterans, and appreciation for the freedoms and opportunities afforded by the United States. A prominent flagpole can become a local landmark, welcoming visitors to Puyallup and creating a sense of civic identity.
On the con side, the location selected for the flag, in the middle of Meridian just South of the Puyallup river raises concerns about public safety. Proper respect for the flag dictates that it be regularly raised, lowered, inspected, illuminated and maintained. To do so, personnel will be required to cross active traffic lanes or require temporary traffic control measures. Transportation agencies generally seek to minimize fixed hazards near roadways. The flagpole itself will be an immovable object located adjacent to moving traffic, a dangerous proposition.
Another concern is the $150,000 opportunity cost of the project. Opportunity cost does not mean the flagpole lacks value. Rather, it recognizes that every dollar spent on one project is unavailable for another. For $150,000, the city could potentially improve pedestrian crossings, implement traffic calming measures, enhance parks and recreation facilities, or repair roadways or sidewalks. Might a 50 ft or 75 foot flagpole achieve the same effect at a fraction of the price. Patriotism is not really a function of flagpole height.
In response to the opportunity cost concern, supporters of the project have implemented a private fundraising campaign to alleviate those costs and replace funds drawn from the general fund. Their objective is to raise all $150,000 by the end of the year. Anyone interested in contributing to this campaign can do so at the following link:
What is clear from this issue is that Puyallup is full of patriots who are all looking out for the best interests of our great city. When they don’t all see eye to eye, it benefits all of us if we consider opposing viewpoints and work together to avoid unintended consequences.
